About sight: Shushenskiy Bor national park

The Shushenskiy Bor is a national park located on the right bank of the Yenisei. It was created to preserve an ecosystem of Siberian forests in the foothills of the Sayan Mountains in 1995. The park includes a highland area of the Western Sayan, as well as the pine forests of the Minusinsk Hollow.

The territory of the Shushenskiy Bor reaches 40 thousand hectares. It stretches for 80 kilometers from Shushenskoye (in the north) to the Sayano-Shushenskaya HES (in the south) on the right bank of the Yenisei.

The places, which are most interesting and easily accessible for all visitors of the Shushenskiy Bor, are Lake Perovo near Shushenskoye and a foothill of Borus Mount near the Sayano-Shushenskaya HES. These two places represent two quite different ecosystems.

The flat part of the park is just near Shushenskoye. Lake Perovo is 15 kilometers from the village. It is a favorite recreation place of the natives. And it is there that Lenin liked to hunt and rest during his exile. On the bank of the lake there remained a hut where he used to rest with local peasants during a hunt.

Zhuravlinaya Gorka (a sand dune of 35 meters high) and the Peschanaya Gorka (a sand dune of 45 meters high) are near Lake Perovo. Also, it will be interesting to have a look at Macherkina Gorka. It is a small dune (up to 4-5 meters) on the border of the Shushenskiy Bor and to the south-west from Shushenskoye. In this place there were discovered the dwelling sites of the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, as well as the dwelling sites of the Afanasyevskaya, Tagar and Tashtyk cultures.

If you want to look at the Sayano-Shushenskaya HES, you will have to go 80 km to the south from Shushenskoye. Cheremushki, a village which is nearest to the hydroelectric station is on the left bank of the Yenisei, while a recreation zone of the Shushenskiy Bor is on the right bank of the river.

A path running through the highland part of the Shushenskiy Bor is called Ekoborus. Its name is related with the Borus, a two-headed mountain of the Western Sayan. The tourist route begins at the kordon «Talovskiy Log» and runs through the valley along the mountain stream Talovka. On the way you can see the Sayano-Shushenskaya HES from above. A recreation zone Dzhoika often visited by the natives is in the upper part of the hydroelectric station on the bank of the reservoir.
