About sight: Vrijdagmarkt

The name of this square means «Friday market», altough it is noted not only for its market. In Middle Ages it was actually the trading center of the city. Today there is a statue of Jacob von Artevelde in the middle of the square. Each building facing the square is very picturesque, however, you should pay particular attention to that of the Craft Union. As well, you should have a look at the tower which was once the seat of a special commission controlling the quality of goods produced by weaving manufactories of Ghent. You may just imagine what important functions these organizations had.
