India travel guide: India

The peculiar or even mysterious culture of India has always attracted both the scientists and common tourists. The riches of India excited the imagination of Alexander Makedonski and lured English colonists. From the time of Indian maharajas to English colonists there has been created a specific atmosphere which every tourist can not help but feel.

India civilization can be considered as one the oldest and most peculiar cultures in the world. Because of its huge territory, traveling over India would take a lot of time. However, there are certain places which you must visit, such as Deli, Agra, Jaipur and Jaisalmer. If you are in for seaside holiday you'd better go to Goa Beaches. If you prefer ecotourism, there are either mountains or deserts or marine reserves and many other beautiful natural sites in India.

So, if are interested in sightseeing, most tours are started from Deli. Firstly, it is easier to get just there almost from any country of the world. Secondly, the capital status of the city can give you some impression of the country's standards of living. And, finally, you can visit there the palaces of the Great Mughals as well as monuments of Muslim culture.

You must go to Agra which is 200 kilometers of Deli. Famous Taj Mahal is located there. The mausoleum was built by Shah Jahan for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died during the birth of their 14th child.

Also, it would be interesting to visit Jaipur which isn’t far from Deli and Agra. In all these cities you can see magnificent specimens of India fortresses which are locally called forts. In Jaipur it is the Amber Fort, as well as Samud Fort in the suburbs of the city. The city of Jaisalmer is on the border with Pakistan (over 500 km of Deli), at the very edge of Thar Desert. There is also a strong fort atop the hill.
During your Agra-Jaipur trip you must visit Fatehpur Sikri (or the city of victory). The city was built by Mughal emperor Akbar and for some time served as the empire's capital. Because of water shortage the city was abandoned by people, but there survived all its buildings, such as strong fortress, palaces, temples and common houses.

Most impressive cities of India are Varanasi and Khajuraho. The temples of Khajuraho were built in 10-11 centuries. A lot of tourists are going there to see their erotic carvings.

For many centuries Varanasi has been a sacred site for the Hindu. There they wash their bodies in the waters of the Gang. Also they cremate there their dead and throw the ashes (or what was left of the bodies) in the river. So if you in for extreme impressions you'll get them. However, if you have strong nerves, your Varanasi trip will be very exciting. Nearby there is Sarnath where Buddha preached his first sermon.

Also, there are many most interesting natural sites in India, such as Thar Desert bordering with Pakistan, Kaziranga National Park, foothills and highlands of the Himalayas, Goa Beaches.
