About city: Naples

There are many contradictory opinions about Naples. On one hand, this southern city is a starting point for tours of the most interesting tourist attractions of the region: islands of Capri and Iskia, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. Indeed, there is something to see in Naples properly, for example, New Castle and Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale di Napoli). And from the picturesque embankment of the city you can have a magnificent view of Egg Castle (or Castel dell'Ovo) and Vesuvius.

On the other hand, notwithstanding abundance of interesting sights, the city could hardly be quite attractive for most tourists. As Naples is a large industrial center and transport hub. Naples has quite a «maddening» traffic, and there are heaps of garbage in back streets of the city (notorious problem of Naples). And some districts are even dangerous in the evening.

So, the best variant would be to go to Naples for a day, which is quite enough time for visiting all the main tourist attractions of the city, including neighbourhood of Royal Palace, Piazza del Plebiscito, and St. Francis Cathedral, resembling the Pantheon of ancient Rome. After that you may go down to the Embankment and then pass from New Castle to Egg Castle (or Castel dell'Ovo). If you are fond of painting, you must visit Capodimonte, one of the most famous picture galleries in Italy.

Having seen all these sights you should look around the environs of Naples, which deserve the highest rating. Especially the lovers of history (as well as all other tourists) must visit the ruins of Pompeii at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. This ancient city was destroyed by volcanic eruption in 73 A. D. However, many houses remained almost intact, so you could move in and live there. Also, you can see the famous Appian Way and the Palace of Caserta.

You can have a very good time at one of the seaside resorts located in the vicinity of Naples, for example Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano, as well as some other villages of Amalfi Coast. Also, nearby islands of Capri and Iskia have long been well-known Italian resorts.

However, you must remember that there are no adequate beaches in the region. Sorrento is a bohemian resort, but it is located on the upright rock, so you can have a bathe only on specialized platforms. Capri also mostly consists of high sheer rocks. There are only two small beaches. And only Positano has more or less comfortable beach.
