About sight: Place Vendome

It is one of the oldest squares of Paris, designed in the domain of duke of Vendôm in 1699. Originally, it was called the Square of Louis the Great. The square is surrounded by Classic buildings, accommodating the offices of banks and jewelry companies. There also located one of the most luxurious Paris hotels, Ritz. There was erected the Vendôm Column in the centre of the square. It is very similar to the Trajan's Column, Rome, but it is 14 meters higher. The column was cast from Russian and Austrian guns, captured during the battle of Austerlitz. Atop the column the sculpture of Napoleon was placed clothed in the toga of Roman emperor.
