About sight: Belvedere

In the period of 1663-1736 near Schonbrunn Palace there was built the Belvedere, a summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, one of the famous military leaders of that time. He was called the «Sword of the Habsburg Dynasty», but he also patronized painters and was art connoisseur. In 1714 he decided to build a summer residence. At first, the architect Johann von Hildebrandt constructed the building of Lower Belvedere, which has become an example of European baroque, and in 1720-23 – a small one-floor building of Upper Belvedere. The Lower Belvedere was used for receptions, and the Upper Belvedere was used as a summer residence.

Today both palaces accommodate museums: Austrian Art Gallery with pictures of Klimt, Schiele, and Kokoschka, as well as Baroque Museum and Medieval Art Museum.
