About place: Nazareth

This small city in the north of Israel gained its wide fame thanks to certain Biblical events, which supposedly took place in Nazareth and its environs. Once upon a time there lived Joseph and Mary and one day the archangel Gabriel told Maria that she would beget a child Jesus. The event is traditionally called the Annunciation, and now the main temple of the city is just the Basilica of Annunciation.

Today Basilica was built in 1969 and is the largest temple in the Middle East. However, at different periods there were at least 5 temples, the first of which was built by St. Helen, mother of Byzantine Emperor Constantine, in 356 A. D. There is a large Franciscan Monastery near the Basilica.

In Nazareth itself you can see St. Joseph Church sometimes referred to as the Church of the Holy Family where of yore was the shop of Joseph. Nearby there is St. Gabriel Church with the holy fountain of the Virgin Mary, then the only source supplying Nazareth with water. According to certain researches, it was just there that the Virgin Mary met with the Archangel Gabriel, who communicated the news of Jesus' nativity, as she could take water only there.

Even more interesting places related to the adult life of Jesus Christ are around Nazareth, for example Cana of Galilee, where Jesus turned water in wine, Thabor Mount, where the Transfiguration happened, Galilee Sea, where Jesus delivered the famous Sermon on the Mount, which became the foundation of Christianity, and walked on water during the storm, and, finally, fed a multitude of people with two fish and five loafs of bread. Almost all places are somehow related to Biblical legends.
