About sight: Al-Azhar Mosque

It had been built during 970-972. It was the period of the Fatimids (the dynasty was so called in commemoration of the daughter of the Prophet Mohammed), which ruled over Egypt for over 300 years. The Mosque has eight gates, the most important and beautiful of which are the Bab al-Muzayinin (or Gate of the Barbers). In the middle of the mosque there is a huge square, dominated by minarets. There are a large number of madrasahs on the square. Now Al Azhar University is one of the most prestigious spiritual academies of Islamic religion. A great number of Islamic students study at its 50 departments.

There is a beautiful park near Al Azhar University. After long and tiring tours of Cairo one can drop in there and enjoy the views of the city.
