About Ait-Ben-Haddou kasbah (fortress): Ait-Ben-Haddou

Ait-Ben-Haddou is the most magnificent fortress situated on the bank of a picturesque river. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. One of the ways to cross the stream is rather curious. No bridge is visible, but you still have to somehow get to the fortress. When you come to the bank of the stream you are besieged by a band of boys on donkeys and horses offering to take you across the stream for 10 dirhams (1 euro). Those who do not want to pay 10 dirhams can easily cross the stream by themselves, as the water, as a rule, does not rise above the ankle – but all the same it would be more interesting to cross the stream on back of a donkey. And when the stream gets dry, the local boys lose these earnings until the next raining season.

Ait-Ben-Haddou kasbah is a large group of square towers and huts. Berber families reside (or seem to reside) in some of the huts and are ready for a small reward to show you their dwellings: «Here is a sitting-room» – say they pointing at a small sofa near the pen with a donkey and a lamb. «Here is a kitchen» - say they pointing at the heap of dishes on the table surrounded by a multitude of flies. «Now I will treat you to tea» - say they and after the words tourists suddenly begin to hasten to the exit paying the demanded 1 euro.

The fortress (kasbah) is on the hillside, so when going up you will always see new views. And the views are quite picturesque. By all means should you climb up to the top to have a panoramic view of the place.
