About sight: Topkapi Palace

The Palace of Topkapi. The full name of the palace is Topkapi Sarayi, which is Turkish for the ‘Palace of Gun Gate’. Its construction was started 5 years after Mehmed II captured Con-stantinople in 1453. It was built on the site of former palace of Byzantine emperors.

Until construction of Dolmabahce Palace in 1856 Topkapi has been the main residence of Turkish sultans for 400 years. You can visit the palace only with guided excursions. Otherwise, it is just impossible to see it. For 4 centuries the palace has been repeatedly reconstructed and restored.
