About place: Aspendos

The ancient city of Aspendos is 30 kilometers of Antalya. It was founded in X B.C., and reached the peak of its glory under the Romans. The ruins of the city itself almost didn’t survive, except the Amphitheatre, which was built by the Roman emperor Marcus Avrelius in 170 B.C., and is in a perfect condition.

Under the Turks the theatre was used as a caravansary, and was reconstructed in 1980. The Amphitheatre of Aspendos is considered to be one of the best-preserved ancient theatres. In the summer season theatrical performances are often held there.

Around the theatre there survived the ruins of basilica portal and agora. To the north-east of the theatre you can see a Roman aqueduct, which supplied the city with water.
