Shri-Lanka
About country: Shri-Lanka

This island country, formerly known as Ceylon, is located south of India. Here you can not only spend your time on beaches, but also make interesting trips to Buddha-related places. The two places that you must visit are Kandy and Sigiria. Both of them are in the central part of Shri-Lanka.

Kandy is a sacred place for Buddhists. For several centuries it has been the capital of Ceylon and there remained the palaces and buildings of that period in the city. It is situated on the beautiful hills. The main sanctuary of Kandy is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It is believed that after parinirvana of Buddha his tooth of was preserved and smuggled to the island by Princess Hemamali. Every year there held 10-day Esala Perahera (the festival of the tooth) in Kandy.

Sigiria is a granite rock with altitude of 370 meters. In V century king Kasapa built his palace on the top of this inaccessible rock. Later, there appeared a city around it, which became the capital of the country. Since then there remained geometrical gardens, ponds and fountains in Sigiria.

Around Colombo, the capital of Shri-Lanka, on the western and southern coasts of the island, there are many resorts, where you can have a good time on wonderful beaches. There is fairly good tourist infrastructure in the area to make you rest more comfortable. The most popular resorts are Ahungalla (80 km of Colombo), Bentota, Vadduva, and Beruvella.

Horton Plains National Park is in the central highland at altitude of 2 meters. There are fairly high mountains, beautiful waterfalls, and dense jungles in the park, but its main attraction is the «World's End». The cliff has altitude of over 1 thousand meters and gives a magnificent view of tea plantations of Ceylon.
