If you want to have a one-day tour of the environs of Moscow, the following sights may be of the greatest interest: the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, Sabbas of Storozhev Monastery and New Jerusalem Monastery, as well as Arkhangelskoye estate. These four sights have a historical value.

The most important tour in the environs of Moscow that you should have is a trip to the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, which is at Sergiyev Posad located 80 kilometers from Moscow. You can get there either by car on the Yaroslavskoye highway or by a suburban train from the Yaroslavsky railway station. The Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra is the most important monastery in Russia, its spiritual center. It was founded by St. Sergius, the most venerable saint in Russia.

It is quite possible to combine a trip to the Sabbas of Storozhev Monastery with a visit to Arkhangelskoye estate, if you travel by car. They are not far from each other on the Novorizhskoye highway.

The Sabbas of Storozhev Monastery was founded by the saint Sabbas in 1398. It is located in Zvenigorod in the environs of Moscow. It will be better to come to it by the Novorizhskoye highway. At the monastery you can see the palace of the tsar Alexei Mikhailovich.

The estate Arkhangelskoye is one of the summer residences of the Sheremetev, the richest noble family in Russia, in the environs of Moscow. There remained the Sheremetev palace and a vast park where it will be interesting to wander among various pavilions and observation sites.

New Jerusalem Monastery is located in the town of Istra, 60 kilometers from Moscow on the Volokolamskoye or Novorizhskoye highways. The monastery was founded by the patriarch Nikon in 1777. It was given the name of «New Jerusalem» because its main church was built after the fashion of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
