About Nizhniy Novgorod Fair: Nizhniy Novgorod Fair

During the 18 century and at the beginning of the 19 century the fair took place on the territory of the Makaryev Convent, which is 100 kilometers further down the Volga river towards Kazan, but after a big fire at the Makaryev Convent fair, which occurred in 1816, it was decided to move the fair to Nizhniy Novgorod.

Unfortunately, now of that fair there remained but the main Russian baroque pavilion on the bank of the Oka river near the Kanavinsky bridge, and only a hundred years ago the Nizhniy Novgorod Fair was the main trading center of the Russian Empire, and occupied very big spaces at the confluence of the rivers Oka and Volga.
