About walls: Kremlin walls and towers

The Pskov Kremlin, located at the place where the Pskova joins the Velikaya river, has strong walls of triangular shape. Two walls join near the Ploskaya tower at the Velikaya river, and the strong southern wall called Persi gives to the Dovmont's Town.
Today only the Kremlin area of 3 hectares is enclosed by strong walls with 7 towers. But in the 14 century, considering the constant threat from the external enemies, the strongest fortified walls encircled all Pskov. Then the territory of 39 hectares was guarded by the walls with 37 towers.
The thickness of the walls of the Pskov Kremlin ranged from 2,5 to 6 meters, and its height – from 6 to 8 meters. The length of the eastern wall of the Kremlin (along the Pskova) was 435 meters, and its western wall on the side of the Velikaya river was 345 meters. The Persi wall was 88 meters long.
It was a strong wall over the Dovmont's Town. In ancient times on its place was a moat andand an earthen bank. The former was then called «greblya» (dam) and the latter – «persi» (breast). Later the earthen bank became the strong wall and the name remained. Now on the ends of the Persi are the Bell Tower serving as the entrance to the Kremlin and the Dovmont's tower, also called Smerdya.
The Dovmont's Town was also surrounded by the walls connected with the Persi walls. The square towers are on the ends of the wall: the strong Vlasievskaya tower on the side of the Velikaya river and the Rybnitskaya tower, which was used as the entrance to the Kremlin, on the side of posad (trading quarter).
The Middle tower is on the side of the Pskova river (the wall is longer there). The household buildings are near the tower. Further on the Kremlin walls meet together at the place where the river joins at the Kutekroma tower. From it the wall comes down to the Pskova river where stands the strong Ploskaya tower.
