In the historical center of Barcelona, next to the Rambla, is located the Gothic quarter. It appeared on the site of the Roman camp of Barcino, and acquired its current appearance in the 14-15 centuries. However, among the narrow winding streets of the medieval district, buildings from the 11th and 12th centuries have also been preserved.

The most significant building of the Gothic quarter is the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia. It was founded in the 13th century. In front of the Cathedral is located a New square. However, despite its name, it is the oldest square in Barcelona. Here was the entrance to the Roman camp Barcino. On the square you can see the towers of the Bishop`s Gate, preserved from the fortress wall of the 15th century. You can go through them to the Bishop`s Palace.

The Cathedral is surrounded by several buildings from the 11th and 14th centuries. All of them have features of the Gothic architectural style. Most popular attraction of Gothic quarter is the "Bridge of Sighs of Barcelona". It is named so by analogy with the Venetian Bridge of Sighs. This is a very romantic place where all tourists take photos. The Gothic bridge in Barcelona is a covered gallery between the Canon`s House and the Government Palace. These houses were built in the Middle ages, but the bridge between them was made only in the 20th century during reconstruction. The Government Palace in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona was built in the 16th century.

The monumental Palace of the King and the Agata Chapel in Barcelona were built in the 13th century. Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles are mixed here. In 1493, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon hosted Christopher Columbus, who returned to Europe after the discovery of America. Later, the Inquisition Tribunal was located here.

In addition to the most important attractions in the Gothic quarter, there are many other churches, museums and squares. Special attention should be paid to the Cathedral of Santa-Maria-del-PI built in the 14th century. There are many restaurants, cafes and just nice places in the quarter. It will take at least 2-3 hours to walk around here.
