17.08.2011 Another literature city appeared in the world

ReykjavikAt the beginning of this August UNESCO gave Reykjavik the title of literature city, reports Geo Meridian portal. Before this title only belonged to four more city - Edinburg, Melbourne, Iowa-City and Dublin.

The capital of Iceland was given this title thanks to its careful attitude to the medieval literature heritage, as well as the place that literature takes in the life of local community. For example, in summer Reykjavik offers free literature excursions where one can get acquainted with literature history of the country, from ancient sagas to our time.

However, Reykjavik isn’t going to stop at what has been accomplished. The local authorities have already announced the plans of building a big literature center and a number of other similar initiatives.

Official announcement about awarding the title of literature city will be made at the international literature festival in September, 2011.
