The tour along the southern shore of Lake Ladoga will take you all day. You can see two medieval fortresses, as well as visit the Tikhvin Monastery, where the revered Tikhvin Icon of the Holy Virgin Mary is kept.
Take the Murmansk Highway from Saint Petersburg. Near Lake Ladoga, turn into the town of Shlisselburg. At the Staroladozhsky Canal there is a pier where you can take a boat that will take you to the island to the Shlisselburg Fortress.
After Shlisselburg, continue along this highway. After crossing the Neva River, it is called "Kola". Turn right into the village of Staraya Ladoga. It is the oldest city in Russia, founded in 753. There is also a fortress here. It has preserved the St. George's Church of the 12th century.
From Staraya Ladoga, go to the city of Tikhvin. There, visit one of the largest monasteries in the North-West in Russia.
