The Old Town of Tbilisi is so full of sights that it is quite difficult to see all the places in detail in 1 day. You need to start the tour as early as possible or split these walks into two days.
The online travel guide Geomerid offers a circular route. You will be able to see all the most interesting sights of the historical center of Tbilisi:
1. Rike Park. Start your route in Rike Park. Once it was a sandy island, but then one arm of the Kura riverbed became shallow, and lowland covered with sand and silt was formed. In the 19th century it was completely built up, but nowadays a beautiful city park with interesting glass structures has been created here.
2. Darejan Palace. Darejan Palace is located near Europe Square. It was built in 1776, but looks like a medieval fortress. Now it houses a monastery. You can go inside the monastery.
3. Metekhi Temple. After passing at the foot of the walls of the Darejan Palace, exit the rocky shore of the Kura, where the first temple of Tbilisi was built in the 7th century – the Metekhi Temple. The cathedral, built in the 13th century, has survived to this day. One of the best viewing point is located at the foot of the monument to the founder of Tbilisi Vakhtang I Gorgasal. Enjoy the views of the Old Town and the Narikala Fortress.
4. Narikala Fortress. At the foot of the Metekhi Temple, on Europe Square, there is the lower station of the Cable car, where you can climb to the top of the Narikala Fortress. You can go there on foot, but it's better to take the cable car, and go back down on foot. In the fortress of Narikala, take a walk through the Lower and Upper Fortresses, go to the Church of St. Nicholas. After that, go down to the Old Town of Tbilisi along Orbiri Street.
5. The Church of St.George. The 13th century Armenian Church of Surb Gevorg (St.George) is located on Orbiri Street on the way of your descent from the Narikala Fortress. Go inside to see the frescoes of the 18th century.
6. Abanotubani Sulfur Baths. The famous Sulfur Baths of Abanotubani are one of the main attractions of Tbilisi. Be sure to schedule their visit for a few hours. Sulfur water has a therapeutic effect on the body. Do this during a separate excursion.
7. Fig gorge. Behind the Sulfur Baths there is an amazing corner in the old town. Here you will see a deep gorge and a waterfall. Even on the hottest day, it's nice to spend time here.
8. The Old Town of Tbilisi. After leaving the Abanotubani area, walk along the Kura embankment to see the old city of Tbilisi. Houses with huge wooden carved balconies look very beautiful. Take a walk for a while among these streets.
9. Zion Cathedral. On the embankment of the Kura River is the Zion Cathedral. For a long time it was the cathedral of Tbilisi. It houses the main shrine of the Georgian Church - the Cross of St. Nina.
10. Bridge of Peace. After the Zion Cathedral, continue your walk through the old town. On Irakli II Street, you can eat in one of the many restaurants and then go to the glass Bridge of Peace. So your ring route through the Old Town will be closed, and you will return to Rike Park again.
