The Agora in Kato Paphos was the main square of the old town, where the market was located. This place was the center of social life. Nearby were the Odeon Theater and the temple of Asclepius.
The agora is a square of 95 x 95 meters. Previously, it was surrounded by granite columns of the Corinthian order. Most of these columns were used in the Middle Ages to strengthen the castle of Saranta Kolones, which the Byzantines built in the 6th century near the port of Paphos to protect against Arab raids.
On the hillside above the Agora is the ancient Odeon Theater. It was built in the 1st century AD. Initially, it had 25 rows, but today only 11 of them have been restored. Perhaps, in ancient times, the Odeon was covered. It was put into a Greek tragedy and Opera. The Odeon of Kato Paphos could accommodate up to 1,200 spectators.
Near the Agora are the ruins of the sanctuary of the Greek god of medicine Asclepius. In this place, people were given first aid, and there was also a nursing home. Fragments of the walls have been preserved from it.
Almost all the ancient buildings of the Agora were destroyed during the earthquakes of the 4th century, and the buildings that appeared here in the early Middle Ages were destroyed by the earthquake of 1222.
