Al Horreya Park, which is translated as "Park of Freedom," is one of the largest and oldest public parks in central Cairo. It is in the southern part of Gezira Island (Zamalek) and serves as an extensive green oasis, isolated from the noise and bustle of dense urban development. The park is a popular leisure spot for both locals and tourists.

History: From a Royal Garden to a Public Space

The park`s history began in the second half of the 19th century, during the era of Khedive Ismail Pasha, when extensive royal gardens were laid out on Gezira Island. These gardens surrounded the Gezira Palace and originally served as a private recreational area for the ruling elite.

Following the 1952 revolution and the nationalization of royal properties, the gardens were converted into a public park. In the spirit of the new era, it was symbolically named " Al Horreya" (Freedom), becoming one of the first public parks of this scale in modern Cairo.

Why is Al Horreya Park Interesting for Tourists?

A Tranquil Green Retreat in the City Center. The park`s main value lies in the opportunity for a peaceful stroll along its wide alleys, shaded by centuries-old trees (ficus, palm, tamarind trees). It is the perfect place to regain energy after sightseeing. There are no significant water bodies (ponds, lakes) on the park`s territory.

Its location makes it a convenient hub for a walking route:
• The Cairo Opera House is located adjacent to the park, on the neighboring grounds. It is just a few minutes` walk from the park`s main entrance to the theater.
• The Cairo Tower is situated in the central part of the island, approximately 2 km from the park. This distance can be covered on foot (about 25-30 minutes through the streets of Zamalek) or by taxi in 5-10 minutes.

Architectural and Botanical Landscape. The park has retained features of formal landscape design with straight alleys and symmetrical flower beds. It allows visitors to appreciate how public space is organized in Cairo and to observe the daily life of Cairenes.

Practical Information for Visitors:
• Opening Hours: Usually from 9:00 to 23:00. Hours are subject to change.
• Entrance: Paid. The fee is symbolic (around 20 Egyptian pounds for foreigners). Ticket booths are located at the main entrances.
• Rules: The park is guarded, and cleanliness is maintained on the premises. Smoking on the lawns may be prohibited.

Al Horreya Park is not a tourist attraction but an important infrastructure element for comfortable leisure. It is especially valuable for tourists planning to visit the Opera House (allowing for a pleasant time before a performance) and those wishing to take a walk through Zamalek towards the Cairo Tower, starting from a quiet green zone.
