The Bank of China Tower (BOCHK Tower) is one of Hong Kong`s most recognizable skyscrapers, famous for its geometric, crystalline design that dominates the city`s financial district. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M. Pei, this architectural gem serves not just as a bank headquarters but also as a symbol of Hong Kong`s economic power.

Constructed between 1985 and 1990, the Bank of China Tower was among the first skyscrapers outside the U.S. to exceed 1,000 feet (367 meters) in height. Its sharp angles resemble a bamboo shoot, symbolizing prosperity and resilience in Chinese culture.

The triangular structural design reduces wind resistance and steel usage, making the building both sturdy and cost-efficient. Some feng shui masters criticized the tower`s sharp angles, believing they emit "negative energy" toward neighboring buildings (such as the HSBC headquarters).

While primarily serving as the Hong Kong headquarters of Bank of China, the tower also houses:

✔ Corporate offices (floors 1-43)
✔ Bank branches (open to the public)
✔ Restaurants and cafés (mainly for employees)
✔ A private club on upper floors

Unlike the ICC or IFC buildings, the Bank of China Tower doesn`t feature a public observation deck. However, visitors can access the 43rd-floor lobby (free of charge) for panoramic views of Victoria Harbour and Central district.

The skyscraper is located in Hong Kong`s Central district, surrounded by major landmarks:

- HSBC Main Building - Another iconic bank headquarters with unique steel construction
- Statue Square - historic square with colonial-era monuments
- Two International Finance Centre (IFC) - Home to the Four Seasons Hotel and luxury shopping mall
- Hong Kong Legislative Council Building - Neoclassical government structure
- Chater Garden - A rare green oasis in Central Hong Kong

Why you should visit:

✔ Architectural icon - one of the world`s most distinctive skyscrapers
✔ Free city views - the 43rd-floor lobby offers perfect photo opportunities
✔ Historical significance - represents China`s economic growth in Hong Kong
