The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is located on the high bank of the Wisla River, 500 meters from the Warsaw Barbican, which is the northern border of the Old Town of Warsaw. The church is located in a very beautiful place. At its foot on the shore is the Square of the First Infantry Division of Tadeusz Kosciuszko, and a little to the north is the Romuald Tragutta Park.
The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary was built in 1410. It was one of the first stone buildings in Warsaw, which in those years was the capital of a small Mazovian principality. In those years, the church was built in the traditional Polish Gothic style. In the middle of the 18th century, the Italian architect Joseph Boretti rebuilt it in the Renaissance style.
During the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising, the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, as well as the entire historical center of Warsaw, was destroyed. In 1947, it was restored to its original Gothic appearance.
There is a monument to Maria Skaldowska-Curie near the altar of the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Warsaw. She is the most famous female scientist in Poland. Maria was born in Warsaw in 1867, she was baptized in this church, and she often visited here with her mother at mass.
Maria Skaldovskaya-Curie is the first scientist who has received the Nobel Prize twice and the only scientist who has received the Nobel Prize in various sciences. In 1903, Maria Skaldovskaya-Curie received the prize in physics, and in 1911 - in chemistry. She and her husband made a huge contribution to the study of radiation and radioactive elements.
