The Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal (CFA) is the highest judicial institution of the Special Administrative Region, housed in the historic former Supreme Court building in the city center. This is not only an important legal body but also an architectural monument from the colonial era.

Constructed in 1912 during British colonial rule, the building originally served as the Supreme Court of Hong Kong. After Hong Kong`s handover to China in 1997, it became the seat of the Court of Final Appeal - the highest appellate court replacing the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in the UK.

During World War II, the Japanese occupation forces used the building as their military police headquarters. In 1985, the court relocated to new premises while this historic structure underwent restoration. Following extensive renovations, the Court of Final Appeal returned here in 2015.

The Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal building represents one of the finest examples of British colonial architecture in Asia:
- Neoclassical facade with columns and triangular pediment
- Dome with gilded spire symbolizing the rule of law
- Statue of Themis (goddess of justice) above the entrance - notably without a blindfold, characteristic of British tradition
- Inner courtyard with natural lighting and high ceilings

Interior features:
- The main courtroom preserves historic wood paneling and stained glass
- Marble staircases and wrought iron railings in early 20th century style
- Portraits of former Chief Justices adorn the walls

Can visitors enter the Court of Final Appeal? Yes, but with restrictions:
- Open court hearings may be attended free (check schedule at official website (https://www.hkcfa.hk)
- Guided tours are rare, typically organized for law students and professionals
- Interior photography is prohibited, though exterior photos are allowed

Tip: To see the interiors, visit during Hong Kong Heritage Days when the building opens to the public.

Located in Central district, the courthouse stands near key Hong Kong landmarks:
- Legislative Council Building (LegCo) - neoclassical structure with columns
- St. John`s Cathedral - Hong Kong`s oldest Anglican church
- Statue Square – historic square with colonial-era monuments
- Bank of China Tower - iconic modernist skyscraper

The Court of Final Appeal building represents a remarkable blend of judicial authority and architectural heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into Hong Kong`s legal history and colonial past. While access is limited, its imposing exterior alone makes it worth including in any Central district walking tour.
