Guangzhou Cultural Park is famous for its stunning, large-scale living floral compositions. From hundreds of thousands of fresh plants, true architectural structures and sculptures are created here. These change with the seasons and holidays, transforming the park into a constantly renewing open-air art exhibition.

History of Creation: An Oasis on the Site of a Labyrinth

The park was officially opened in 1956, and its creation was an important urban development project to improve the city center. However, its history goes much deeper.

It is located in the historical epicenter of Canton`s trade, on territory directly adjacent to the famous Thirteen Factories waterfront — the district where foreign merchants lived and conducted business in the 18th–19th centuries. In fact, the park was laid out on the site of a labyrinth of old trading streets and warehouses, becoming a cultural and recreational "lung" for city residents in the post-war era.

Floral Splendor: Living Sculptures and Thematic Masterpieces

It is precisely for the flowers that many residents and guests of the city come here. The park is adorned year-round with large-scale compositions of living flowers and plants, which are true works of garden art.

Scale and Design: Some compositions are monumental — these are huge floral arches, multi-tiered flower beds several meters high, figures of animals (dragons, elephants, birds), pagodas, and even entire panoramic scenes from Chinese mythology or cityscapes, made from thousands of living flowers.

Seasonality and Themes: The compositions are regularly updated according to the seasons and major holidays. The most impressive displays are timed for the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), the Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day of the PRC. Themes can range from traditional symbols of good fortune to modern abstract installations.

Technique: The masters use a "floral mosaic" technique, planting dense clusters of colorful plants (begonias, chrysanthemums, cineraria, coleus, etc.) to create clear patterns and three-dimensional forms. This requires incredible precision in planning and maintenance.

The Cultural Heart of the Park: The Thirteen Factories Museum

The main historical gem of the park and the reason to visit even aside from the flowers is the Thirteen Factories Museum, located in the central part.

What it is: The museum is located on the site of the historical Danish Factory and is a reconstruction of the trading establishments from the era of the "Canton System." It is a "window" into the 18th–19th centuries when Guangzhou (Canton) was China`s only open gateway for foreign trade.

Why it`s important: Information boards and exhibits (ceramics, coins, models) tell the fascinating story of tea, silk, porcelain, and the cultural exchange that took place right on this very spot. It is the ideal historical context before a walk through Shamian Island.

Events and Atmosphere

Guangzhou Cultural Park is a vibrant public space bustling with life:

Exhibitions and Festivals: In addition to the permanent floral displays, thematic exhibitions (bonsai, chrysanthemums, orchids), folk fairs, and cultural festivals are regularly held here.

Activities for Residents: In the mornings and evenings, the park fills with local residents practicing tai chi chuan, folk dancing or playing board games — this is a wonderful opportunity to observe the daily life of the city`s inhabitants.

What to See for Tourists:
• Start with the Thirteen Factories Museum: Immerse yourself in history to understand the significance of this area.
• Floral Hunt: Walk around the entire park along the perimeter and through the center, searching for the largest and most detailed floral compositions. Don`t forget your camera!
• Observe Life: Sit on a bench and watch the local residents — it is no less fascinating than sightseeing.
• Combine with Shamian: Since the park is a 10–15-minute leisurely walk from Shamian Island, it is logical to plan a single route: immersion in the colonial architecture of Shamian → historical context at the Factories Museum → aesthetic enjoyment in the flower park.

Guangzhou Cultural Park offers an ideal balance between educational content, aesthetic pleasure, and the opportunity to see authentic urban life, making it a mandatory and very interesting stop on a Liwan itinerary.
