The length of the Sozh River embankment in Gomel is 2.5 kilometers. This well-maintained and picturesque area stretches along the right bank of the river. It starts in the city center and ends at the Palace Park of Gomel. The embankment is a popular spot for walking and sports activities due to its convenient location and beautiful views of the river.
The Sozh River embankment in Gomel harmoniously combines natural beauty and modern infrastructure. The Sozh River is a tributary of the Dnieper and widens into the large Lake Volodkino on the northern outskirts. Previously, this area was a sand quarry, but it was later flooded and developed into a recreational zone called the "Water-Green Diameter of Gomel." It is located on the left bank of the Sozh River, while the embankment is on the right bank. These two popular recreational areas are connected by the Bauman Pedestrian Bridge.
In the central part of the Sozh River embankment, a monument to the First Settler named Gom was installed in 2006. Locals refer to this sculpture as the "Boatman." The monument depicts a man in a boat, dressed in ancient Russian clothing, holding a spear and a shield. A lynx, which is featured on the city`s coat of arms, sits in the boat with him. This sculptural composition was erected in honor of the ancient inhabitants of the city from the Slavic tribe of Radimichi and symbolizes the connection between past and present.
Near the embankment is the Swan Pond, a cozy artificial reservoir created in a deep ravine. Once, the Gomenyuk stream, which gave the city of Gomel its name, flowed here, but it dried up several centuries ago. In the mid-20th century, an artificial pond was created here. Swans live on the pond and have become a symbol of this charming spot. Visitors can feed the birds and take beautiful photos.
One of the most recognizable landmarks on the embankment is the Bauman Pedestrian Bridge over the Sozh River. It is about 250 meters long and connects the two banks, offering stunning views of the river and the city. The bridge has become a favorite spot for walks, romantic meetings, and photo sessions. It is especially beautiful in the evening when the embankment is illuminated.
If you cross the Bauman Bridge from the Sozh River embankment to the other side, you will find a beach and forest trails in the Water-Green Diameter of Gomel area. The beach is equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable stay: sunbathing areas, volleyball courts, and cafes. In the summer, this place becomes a hub for locals and tourists who want to swim in the clear waters of the Sozh or simply sunbathe on the shore.
The Sozh River embankment features bike paths, sports grounds, children`s play areas, and cafes where you can try traditional Belarusian dishes. During the warmer months, concerts and other cultural events are often held on the embankment.
