GitGit Waterfall is a picturesque and popular natural attraction in Bali, located in the northern part of the island. Surrounded by dense tropical forests, GitGit Waterfall offers visitors the chance to not only admire the waterfall but also explore the jungles growing along the riverbanks.
GitGit Waterfall is situated near the village of GitGit, approximately 10 kilometers south of Singaraja, the administrative center of northern Bali. You can reach the waterfall by car or scooter, following the main road from Denpasar or Ubud towards Singaraja. The route passes through scenic rice fields, coffee plantations, and spice gardens. Tourists often combine a visit to GitGit Waterfall with trips to Ulun Danu Temple (Pura Ulun Danu) on Lake Beratan and the Bali Botanic Garden (Kebun Raya Bali).
GitGit Waterfall is located on the GitGit River, which originates in the mountainous regions of northern Bali. The river flows through dense jungles, creating several cascades, the most famous of which is the main waterfall. The waterfall is about 35 meters high, and its waters plunge noisily into a small lake surrounded by rocks and tropical vegetation.
Unlike some other waterfalls in Bali, GitGit is easily accessible. A well-maintained trail with stairs and bridges leads from the parking area to the waterfall, making it suitable even for those not accustomed to long hikes.
Wear comfortable shoes, as the trail can be slippery. Bring a swimsuit and towel if you plan to swim. At the base of the waterfall, there are several natural pools where you can take a dip.
Near GitGit Waterfall in northern Bali, there are several interesting attractions that can make your trip even more enriching. The northern part of the island is less touristy than the south but is rich in natural beauty, cultural sites, and authentic villages.
1. Sekumpul Waterfall. Distance from GitGit: about 20 km. Sekumpul Waterfall is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bali. It consists of several cascades surrounded by dense jungles. Getting there is a bit more challenging than to Gitgit, but the views are worth it.
2. Aling-Aling Waterfall. Distance from GitGit: about 15 km. This waterfall is known for its natural water slides and cliff jumps. It features several cascades, offering opportunities for both nature appreciation and active recreation.
3. Lake Beratan and Ulun Danu Temple (Pura Ulun Danu). Distance from GitGit: about 25 km. Lake Beratan is one of Bali`s most scenic lakes, located in the highlands. On its shore stands the famous Ulun Danu Temple, dedicated to the water goddess Dewi Danu. This site is considered sacred and is often depicted on postcards and souvenirs.
4. Coffee and Spice Plantations. Distance from GitGit: within 10–15 km. Northern Bali is renowned for its coffee, cocoa, vanilla, clove, and other spice plantations. Many locals offer plantation tours where you can learn about coffee cultivation and processing, as well as sample the famous Balinese luwak coffee.
5. Singaraja City. Distance from Gitgit: about 10 km. Singaraja is the former capital of the Dutch colonial administration in Bali. The city retains its colonial architecture and old-world charm. Here, you can stroll along the waterfront, visit local markets, and explore museums.
6. Lovina Beach. Distance from GitGit: about 15 km. Lovina is a peaceful black volcanic beach in northern Bali, famous for its dolphins. Early in the morning, you can take a boat ride to observe these amazing creatures.
7. Banyumala Waterfall. Distance from GitGit: about 20 km. This waterfall is less famous than GitGit but equally beautiful. It consists of two cascades that flow into a small lake surrounded by tropical vegetation.
