A symbol of modern Macau, the Macau Tower was officially opened on December 19, 2001, after three years of construction. Its creation was initiated by Dr. Stanley Ho, a legendary entrepreneur who wanted to give his hometown a recognizable architectural symbol. The project was designed by the New Zealand architectural firm Craig Craig Moller Ltd., inspired by the imagery of Auckland`s skyscrapers.
The construction cost approximately 135 million US dollars. The tower did not just change the city`s skyline — it became a beacon of its post-historical, international identity.
• Total height: 338 meters (with antenna — 338 m, height of the main structure — 330 m).
• World ranking: ranks 10th among the tallest freestanding towers in the world (as of 2023).
• Weight and construction: the weight of the steel structure is about 16,000 tons. The tower can withstand winds of up to 300 km/h and earthquakes of up to magnitude 8 on the Richter scale.
• Elevator speed: special double-decker panoramic elevators deliver visitors to the observation deck in less than 60 seconds.
• Visibility: On a clear day, the view extends for 55 kilometers, covering not only all of Macau but also part of neighboring Zhuhai and the island territories.
At the 223-meter level: Observation Decks
Here are the indoor and outdoor observation decks with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows. Underfoot are several glass floor sections ("skywalk"), creating the effect of walking on air. This is the perfect place for a calm inspection: you can see the historic center with its Senado Square, the Cotai skyscrapers, the bridges connecting the islands of Macau, and the South China Sea. A souvenir shop and cafe are in operation.
At the 233-meter level: The revolving restaurant "360°"
The restaurant makes a full rotation in 40-60 minutes, allowing you to enjoy the changing panorama during lunch or dinner. The cuisine is international fusion with an emphasis on Portuguese, Chinese, and Indian motifs. Advance reservation of a window table is mandatory.
At the 233-meter level: Restaurant "The Lounge"
A more intimate atmosphere, ideal for cocktails and light snacks at sunset when the city begins to dress in lights.
At the 250-meter level: Adrenaline Peak (Skywalk X and Bungy Jump)
This is the heart of extreme sports and a world mecca for thrill-seekers.
• Skywalk X: A walk along a narrow path with a parapet only waist-high along the outer rim of the tower. You are attached with a safety harness, but the feeling of absolute freedom and height is complete.
• Bungy Jump (233 m): The legendary jump from a height of 233 meters, organized by the company AJ Hackett. This is the world`s highest commercial bungee jump (according to the Guinness World Records). The fall lasts about 20 seconds at speeds up to 200 km/h.
• SkyJump (233 m): A less extreme but equally impressive controlled freefall descent on a cable ("high-speed descent").
• Rock climbing on the tower`s outer wall and the SkyJump Mast supplement the list of activities for true daredevils.
• Contrast of eras: On one side, you can see the old colonial Macau with its narrow streets, on the other — the glittering Cotai, the "Las Vegas of Asia." This contrast is best perceived from a height.
• Versatility: The place suits everyone: romantic couples for a dinner with a view, families for sightseeing, adrenaline seekers for a jump, and photographers for the best shots.
• Cultural symbol: The tower is not just an attraction, but part of the city`s image, often appearing in films and series about Macau.
• Night magic: After dark, the tower becomes the center of a light show, and the view of the illuminated city is completely different than during the day.
• Best time: Sunset hours are the golden time. You will capture the day, the magical change of colors, and the night panorama in one visit.
• Tickets: It is more profitable to purchase combined tickets online in advance (for example, "observation deck + Skywalk X").
• Safety: All extreme attractions are conducted with professional equipment and instruction. The safety level is exceptionally high.
Macau Tower is an experience where every meter up intensifies the impressions: from cultural observation to personal challenge. If you want to simply admire the views, take the best photos, and have a calm dinner — this is the place for you. If you are looking for thrills — this is definitely the place for you. There is entertainment here for everyone.
