Mount Jantugan is one of the peaks of the Main Caucasian Mountain Range. Its height reaches 4,012 meters above sea level. It has a beautiful pyramidal shape from the side of the gorge of the River Adyl-Su. The northwestern slope of the mountain is covered by the Bashkara Glacier. The meltwater of the glacier formed Lake Bashara at the foot of the mountain.
The most popular route along the gorge of the Adyl-Su River ends at the high moraine of the Bashkara glacier. From this moraine, Mount Jantugan looks very impressive. Some tourists go further to the Gumachi pass. There is a mountaineering shelter, a Green Inn, and a glaciological station at Moscow State University. The Junquat Glacier descends into the valley from the station side along the northeastern slope of Mount Jantugan. Its area reaches 3 square kilometers. There is a Gumachi Pass (3805 m) between the Jantugan and Gumachi mountains. It is open for passage in summer, but this is only possible with special climbing equipment.
Access to the Gumachi Pass requires registration of a border zone pass. Previously, it was also required to enter the Adyl-Su gorge, but now the border post at the beginning of the gorge has been removed and left only near the Green Inn.
