The Museum of the history of the city of Sudak is located in the former Cottage of Funk, at the foot of the Genoese Fortress. Funk`s cottage is the only building on the Sudak Embankment that has survived to this day since the beginning of the 20th century. It houses the exposition of the Museum of the History of Sudak from ancient times to the present day.
Fyodor Funk was a Prussian nobleman in the service of the Vice-Governor Konstantin Gorchakov in Kiev. In 1912, he built a cottage in Sudak and in the summer months came here to study the nature of the Crimea. The house is built in an eclectic style with elements of Neo-Gothic. The facade of the lower floor was laid out with masonry. After 1917, the authorities nationalized the building, and in 1998 there was a fire.
The Museum of the History of the city of Sudak was opened here in 2004. The first floor was restored, and the second floor had to be built anew. In 4 halls of museums you can get acquainted with the history of Sudak from the Paleolithic to the present day. For several centuries, Crimea was owned by a variety of tribes, nations and states. But Sudak had strategic importance in the 14th and 15th centuries, when it was owned by the Genoese. Sudak was the main military base protecting their trading colonies located all along the coast from Chersonesos in Sevastopol to Pantikapey in Kerch.
In the first hall you can see archaeological finds found in the settlements of the Taurians, Alans and Goths. They inhabited the Crimea from the Paleolithic era until the appearing of the Greek colonies here. Then Crimea was under the protectorate of the Roman Empire. The rest of the halls are dedicated to the events of the late eras, when Crimea was under the rule of various states. He changed several names: Sugdea, Surozh, Soldaya, Sudak.
Of great interest are the photographs of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, which show how the Sudak looked at that time. Then only a few houses were built at the foot of the Genoese fortress. One of the first was Kapon`s Cottage, then Funk`s cottage, Focht`s cottage and others appeared.
