The New Rambla (Rambla Nova) boulevard is the main street of Tarragona, located in close proximity to the old town of Part Alta. It starts near the observation deck of the Mediterranean Balcony and stretches to the Imperial Tarraco, the main square of the city.
Modern Tarragona is divided into Lower and Upper town. On the hill is the old town of Part Alta, which arose on the site of the Roman city of Tarraco. It was surrounded by fortress walls. Over time, life in the city became more comfortable, and residents needed a spacious Boulevard for walking, which could not be within the narrow winding streets of the old city.
Thus, just like in neighboring Barcelona, Ramblas appeared along the city walls, which became the favorite places of recreation for citizens. In Tarragona, the Rambla initially passed close to the city walls, so in 1854, next to the Old Rambla (Rambla Vecchia), a spacious Rambla Nova street was built, which became the most beautiful street in the city.
The most beautiful houses in Tarragona were built on the New Rambla in the 19th century. Monuments were also erected here. One of the largest is dedicated to the builders of the Castels human towers. It was installed in 1999 and depicts a pyramid of 219 human bodies in 8 levels.
In the center of the New Rambla Boulevard is the fountain of the Century (also called the Fountain of the Four Continents). Next to it is the famous art Nouveau building Casa de La Punxa. It is part of the Route of Modernism in Barcelona. It houses the Tarragona Chamber of Commerce. The building of the Pension Fund Was built on top of it in the monumental Catalan style.
