October Square is one of the most significant squares in Minsk. It hosts many state events, as well as festivals and concerts. The square is surrounded by beautiful buildings constructed in the Stalinist Empire style in the 1950s. On the opposite side of Independence Avenue, you can take a stroll through Alexander Garden.

There are three notable buildings on October Square: the Palace of the Republic, the Trade Unions` Palace of Culture, and the Central House of Officers.

Palace of the Republic

The Palace of the Republic is a modern building that has become one of the landmarks of Minsk. Its construction began in 1985 but, due to difficulties related to the collapse of the USSR, was completed only in 2001. Today, it is a multifunctional cultural and business center hosting concerts, theater performances, exhibitions, and official events.

Architecture: The building is designed in the style of Soviet modernism with elements of monumentalism. Its strict geometric shapes, massive columns, and large glass surfaces create an impression of grandeur and modernity.

Interiors: Inside, the Palace of the Republic impresses with its scale. The main hall seats 2,700 people and is equipped with modern sound and lighting systems. World-famous stars have performed here.

Trade Unions` Palace of Culture

The Trade Unions` Palace of Culture is a striking example of Stalinist Empire architecture. Built in 1954, it has since served as a center of cultural life in the city, hosting concerts, festivals, exhibitions, and other events.

Architecture: The building is distinguished by its monumentality and rich decor. The facade is adorned with columns, bas-reliefs, and sculptures symbolizing labor, art, and science. A tower with a spire crowns the building.

Interiors: Inside, the Trade Unions` Palace of Culture retains elements of its original decor, including marble staircases, luxurious chandeliers, and stucco moldings. The main hall, seating 1,000 people, is renowned for its acoustics.

Central House of Officers

The Central House of Officers is a building constructed in 1939 and is one of the few pre-war structures preserved in Minsk. It was designed by architect Iosif Langbard and originally intended for the cultural leisure of military personnel.

Architecture: The building is designed in the constructivist style with elements of classicism. Its strict forms and symmetrical lines emphasize military discipline and order. The facade is decorated with bas-reliefs on military themes.

Interiors: Inside the building, there is a museum dedicated to the history of the Armed Forces of Belarus, showcasing exhibits related to the country`s military history. It also houses a concert hall, a library, and a cinema hall.

On October Square in Minsk, major city events are held, such as Victory Day, Independence Day, and New Year celebrations. In summer, the square becomes a place for walks and gatherings, while in winter, an ice rink is set up, and the country`s main Christmas tree is installed. The square features the "Minsk—Hero City" obelisk monument, unveiled in 1985 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War.

Around the square, there are cafes, restaurants, and shops, making it a convenient place to relax after a tour. If you are interested in history, visit the museum at the Central House of Officers.
