The tower complex of the village of Old Goor is one of the most interesting sights of Mountainous Dagestan. It is located on the top of a mountain near a rocky cliff, at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level. It is worth coming here to see beautiful mountain landscapes and take photos in the "Troll’s Tongue".
It is best to plan a whole day to explore all the sights of Old Goor and Old Kahib. This will give you the opportunity to take a walk around the neighborhood. In Old Goor you will see watchtowers and beautiful mountain landscapes. The village of Old Kahib is located just below in the valley. It is as beautiful as Old Goor and a visit to Old Kahib must be planned.
Old Goor was once a fortified mountain village. It was inhabited by seven families who built seven battle towers. Houses and outbuildings were located around them. Some of them are located directly at the edge of a rocky cliff. The time of construction of these towers dates back to the 16th-17th century. In the masonry walls there are stones with petroglyphs and patterns that may belong to the pre-Islamic period. Such combat towers were very common in Ingushetia and Ossetia, partly in Chechnya. There are almost none in Dagestan.
At the end of the 19th century, the residents decided to move lower, as a result the village of Old Goor was abandoned. People moved to the village of New Goor, which is located in the valley, 150 meters below. Farming and cattle breeding in the valley was much easier than at the top of the mountain. People from the Old Kahib also moved to the New Kahib.
Some of the houses and towers in the Old Goor were dismantled by people in order to build houses in a new place. Only 4 towers out of seven have survived to this day. The tallest tower of the Old Goor (25 meters) collapsed a few years ago. The height of the remaining 4 towers is 15-20 meters.
No less famous attraction of Old Goor is the rock "Troll Tongue". It is a prong that protrudes several meters above the cliff. The photos of this "Tongue" look especially impressive from the side. Local people call it "Maiden Rock".
From the village of New Goor, you need to climb to the watchtowers of the Old Goor on foot, although some people drive cars directly to the towers. If you walk, you will have to walk another 1 kilometer and the climb will be another 100 meters.
