The Olkhon Gate Strait is not just a geographical feature, but the main "gate" to Olkhon Island for all car travelers. It is the narrowest and deepest strait of the Maloye More (Small Sea), separating the island from the mainland coast. Its width at the narrowest point is about 1 kilometer, and its length is approximately 8 km.

Due to its narrowness, the strait is known for its treacherous nature: strong winds often blow here, creating dangerous waves, especially during weather changes. It is through this strait that the only year-round transport link connecting Olkhon to the "mainland" passes.

Summer Ferry: Ferries, Queues, and Life Hacks

During the snow-free period, usually from late April to late December, the connection is provided by the "Zastava" ferry crossing, linking the mainland village of Sakhyurta (MRS) and the island village of Khuzhir.

How the crossing works:
Number and type of ferries: Two car ferries operate — the "Olkhon Gates" and the "Dorozhnik". These are capacious vessels capable of carrying up to 20-25 vehicles per trip. Additionally, a third vessel may operate on the busiest days.
Operating hours: During the summer season (approximately from June 1 to September 1), the ferry operates from 07:00 to 00:00 without days off. In May, September, and December, the schedule may be reduced, for example, from 08:00 to 22:00. Important: The schedule may change depending on weather and passenger traffic; always check the official website of FKU Upravlenie dorog "Pribaikalye" or in local social media groups.
Cost: The crossing for passenger cars and passengers is FREE. This is a state service. Only commercial trucks require payment.
Travel time: The actual crossing of the strait takes about 15-20 minutes.

Queues and Waiting Times

On calm days (May, September, weekdays in June and August):
The queue is minimal. You can get on the ferry within the next trip or wait 1-2 hours. The ideal time to arrive is in the morning (before 10:00) or in the evening (after 20:00).

On peak days (July, weekends and holidays throughout the summer):
The queue can stretch for several kilometers. The average waiting time is from 4 to 8 hours, and on the busiest days (season opening, July weekends) it can reach 12 hours or more.

Practical Tips for the Summer Ferry:
• Fuel and Toilets: Fill up your tank in Sakhyurta or Yelantsy (prices are higher on the island). Use the stationary toilets before entering the queue.
• Food and Water: Bring a sufficient supply of water and food.
• Do Not Block the Exit: When waiting in line, always leave a passage for local residents and special vehicles.
• Alternative for Pedestrians: If you are without a car, you can cross on one of the private boats for a fee, which will save you a lot of time.

Winter Crossing: The Ice Road

When the strait is bound by sufficiently strong ice (usually from late January to early March), the ferries stop operating, and the official ice crossing opens.
How it works: Specialists check the thickness and structure of the ice, after which they organize a marked track (winter road) directly on the ice of the strait.
Speed and Rules: Movement on the ice road is permitted at a speed of no more than 40 km/h, with a mandatory distance between vehicles of at least 100 meters. Prohibited: overtaking, sudden braking, and driving without fastened seatbelts.
Hazards: The main dangers are cracks in the ice and traffic jams caused by inexperienced drivers. Strictly follow the marked track.

Off-Season: The Period of Inaccessibility

• The most difficult periods for the crossing are December and April.
• Spring Closure (April): The ice becomes thin and dangerous; the ice crossing is closed. Navigation is not yet open. During this time, it is almost impossible to reach the island by car.
• Autumn Closure (December): The strait freezes, but the ice is not yet strong enough. The ferries have already stopped running, and the ice road is not yet open. This period is also characterized by a lack of stable transport connection to the island for vehicles.

Summary for Tourists:
• When planning a trip to Olkhon by car, be sure to consider the season.
• In summer, allocate a whole day for the crossing, be prepared for queues, and bring patience.
• In winter, strictly follow the rules for driving on ice.
• During the off-season (April, December), check current information about the crossing`s operation, as it may be impossible to get to the island by car.

Proper preparation for crossing the Olkhon Gate Strait is the key to ensuring your acquaintance with Baikal begins calmly and without unnecessary stress.
