Between the famous beaches of Railay East and Phra Nang in the Ao Nang resort area lies one of Krabi`s most picturesque and hard-to-reach attractions—Princess Lagoon. This place isn`t for everyone: reaching it requires physical fitness, caution, and proper gear. But those who dare to take on the challenge will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of an emerald-green lagoon surrounded by towering limestone cliffs.

The Legend of the Princess and the Sacred Cave

According to local legend, both the lagoon and the nearby Phra Nang Cave are named after an Indian princess who was shipwrecked off these shores centuries ago. The story goes that the beautiful princess, daughter of the sea king, found refuge in this cave after being caught in a storm. Local fishermen, struck by her grace and nobility, began worshipping her as a guardian spirit of sailors.

Over time, the cave became a sanctuary, where you can still see wooden phallic symbols—offerings from fishermen praying for good fortune at sea and fertility. The hidden lagoon, according to legend, was the princess`s favorite bathing spot, and its waters are still believed to hold magical properties.

The Challenging Journey to Princess Lagoon

1. First Stop: The Railay Viewpoint: before reaching Princess Lagoon, you must climb to the viewpoint above Railay East Beach. Even this initial ascent is challenging—the trail winds upward over rocks and tree roots, with sections requiring rope handrails for support. But the effort is worth it: from the top, you’ll enjoy one of Thailand’s most spectacular views, overlooking Railay East Beach at the base and Railay West Beach in the distance, all framed by dramatic karst cliffs.

2. Three Levels of Descent with Steep Elevation Drops: from the viewpoint begins the most difficult part—the descent to Princess Lagoon. It consists of three distinct sections, each requiring extreme caution:

• First level – Relatively gentle but already slippery due to wet rocks.
• Second level – A steep descent using ropes—no way down without proper support.
• Third level – The most dangerous: an almost vertical drop covered in red clay. After rain, the clay turns into a slippery slide.

Many hikers, realizing the difficulty, choose to stop at the upper palm grove, where towering palms and a massive banyan tree create a peaceful, photogenic spot. But the lagoon itself lies further below—and only those with hiking shoes and clothes they don’t mind ruining should attempt the final descent.

Princess Lagoon: A Magical Sight That Only Appears at High Tide

The Princess Lagoon itself is a small but stunning pool that only fills with water during high tide. When the ocean rises, a turquoise lagoon forms between the cliffs, its crystal-clear waters enclosed by sheer rock walls. At low tide, it becomes a muddy basin, so timing your visit with the tide schedule is crucial.

Why Visit?

✔ Seclusion – Few visitors make it here due to the difficult access.
✔ Unreal beauty – The lagoon feels like a hidden paradise, especially under sunlight.
✔ Adventure – The journey itself is an adrenaline-pumping experience.
✔ Legendary connection – A chance to connect with Krabi’s ancient myths.

Tips for Visiting Princess Lagoon:

• Footwear – Hiking shoes with good grip are a must—flip-flops won’t cut it.
• Clothing – Wear something you don’t mind staining red—the clay is nearly impossible to wash out. Many travelers bring old clothes they plan to discard afterward.
• Best time – Morning, before low tide begins and while the clay is still firm.

Final Verdict: Is It Worth the Risk?
Princess Lagoon is for adventurers, not casual beachgoers. If you’re prepared for a tough climb down (and back up!) and don’t mind getting dirty, you’ll witness one of Krabi’s most stunning natural wonders, steeped in ancient legend. If extreme hiking isn’t your thing, the Railay viewpoint and palm grove still offer incredible views without the risk. Either way, this trek will be an unforgettable experience.
