The resort village of Protaras is located on the eastern coast of Cyprus, north of the Kavo Greco National Park. Many people call it the best beach resort in Cyprus. More than a kilometer along the main resort area of the town stretches a magnificent beach. There are hotels on this beach.
Protaras was founded in ancient times, but it remained a small polis called Lefkol. In those years, the capital of Cyprus was first ancient Salamis (on the east coast), and then Paphos (on the west coast). Until the 1980s, Protaras remained an ordinary coastal village.
The main resort of Cyprus was Famagusta, or rather its bohemian district of Varosha. However, after the Turkish invasion in 1974, Varosha fell into the demilitarized zone, surrounded by barbed wire. After that, the authorities of Cyprus decided to develop the resorts of Ayia Napa and Protaras. Here the construction of large hotels and the creation of tourist infrastructure began. Now they are the best beach resorts in Cyprus.
Protaras resort is located the farthest from the international airport of Larnaca. But we are talking about a distance of only 70 kilometers. Cyprus is not a big island. There is a highway from Larnaca to Protaras, so the journey will take no more than 1 hour.
Vrisi Bay Beach (Vrisy Bay) is the largest beach in Protaras. With a length of one kilometer. 300 meters to the south is the equally magnificent Fig Tree Beach. To the north and south of these main beaches of Protaras are more than a dozen small sandy beaches.
From Fig Tree Beach to Pernera Beach, a promenade stretches along the sea for 3 kilometers. In some places, it has wooden flooring. In the evenings, it is always filled with people who walk and enjoy the sea breeze. In the morning, you can see the sun rising over the sea.
Behind the first line of hotels is Leoforos Protaras Street. Dozens of restaurants, entertainment venues, and less expensive hotels are located there. But it is important to remember that in Protaras there are no noisy nightclubs and youth parties, as in Ayia Napa. Here the rest is more respectable. Families with young children come here, for whom beautiful beaches and gastronomic opportunities are more important.
