Opened in 1998, the Shanghai Grand Theatre became China`s first world-class multifunctional theatre complex. Its construction took 6 years and cost 1.2 billion yuan. Architect Jean-Marie Charpentier created a design combining Chinese traditions with French avant-garde.

Futuristic Design of Shanghai Grand Theatre

• The main building resembles a crystal palace with a 10-story glass facade
• Roof in the shape of "flying jade" (a symbol of good luck in Chinese culture)
• Night lighting with 880 LED lamps creates the effect of a floating structure

Interiors:
• The main hall is decorated with 1,000 gold plates featuring traditional patterns
• The lobby ceiling is designed in the shape of a magnolia flower—the symbol of Shanghai
• Acoustics were developed with the participation of Japanese specialists
