The Singapore Cable Car is not just a mode of transport; it is one of the most spectacular ways to reach the resort island of Sentosa while simultaneously seeing the city from a bird`s-eye view. It was Singapore`s first cable car system and has become an integral part of its tourist infrastructure, offering unique vistas unavailable from the ground.
The system was officially opened on February 15, 1974. It was initially conceived as a practical solution for transporting tourists to the developing resort island of Sentosa, replacing less capacious ferries. However, it very quickly became a major attraction itself.
A landmark moment in the cable car`s history was its major upgrade in 2015. The cabins, towers, and mechanical equipment were completely replaced. Today, two generations of cabins operate on the route: modern ones with panoramic glass floors ("Jewels of Sentosa") and classic, but also refurbished, ones.
System Type: This is a bidirectional aerial tramway. This means the cabins move along a fixed track of supporting cables, and their movement is powered by a haulage cable driven by the station`s engine. The cabins are permanently attached to the cable and move on a circulating loop.
Route and Length: The system consists of two interconnected lines:
• Mount Faber Line: Connects Mount Faber peak to Sentosa Island.
• Sentosa Line: Travels over Sentosa Island itself, linking the "Sentosa" station with the "Imbiah Lookout" and "Siloso Point" stations.
• The total route length is approximately 1.65 km.
Number of Stations: There are 5 stations in total:
• Mount Faber (starts on the mainland)
• Harbourfront (transfer point on the mainland, next to VivoCity mall)
• Sentosa (main entrance to the island)
• Imbiah Lookout (central part of the island)
• Siloso Point (beach zone)
Height: The cabins ascend to a height of up to 60 meters above sea level, offering impressive panoramas of the Singapore port, the South Sea, and the skyscrapers of the Central Business District.
Cabins: The fleet includes 66 standard cabins (capacity: 8 people) and 7 premium "Crystal Cabins", distinguished by their transparent glass floors that create a sensation of floating in the air.
• 360° Panoramic Views: It is the only way to simultaneously see Singapore`s business district, one of the world`s busiest ports, and Sentosa`s tropical beaches in a single frame. The sunset view from here is particularly impressive.
• Direct Beach Access: The cable car provides direct access to Sentosa`s famous beaches.
• The Siloso Point station is within walking distance of Siloso Beach — a hub for water sports and parties.
• From the same Siloso Point station, a dedicated pedestrian path leads easily to Palawan Beach, known for its bridge to the southernmost point of continental Asia. This takes about 10-15 minutes for a leisurely walk.
• Romantic Experience: The cable car offers special "Cable Car Sky Dining" packages, allowing you to dine with a view of the city lights coming on at night, right during the ride.
• Scenic Bypass of Traffic: During peak hours, when the bridge to Sentosa is congested, the cable car becomes the fastest and most pleasant way to reach the island.
The Singapore Cable Car is a must-visit attraction that offers much more than just a transfer to Sentosa. While it may not match the height or length of Alpine giants, it more than compensates for its unique location and the unforgettable sensation of flight over the sea that it gives every passenger.
