The Swan Pond in Gomel is one of the most picturesque and cozy spots in the Palace Park. The Swan Pond is a deep ravine that divides the Palace Park into two parts. On one side stands the Rumyantsev-Paskevich Palace, while on the other side there are children`s attractions. Large trees grow on both sides of the ravine, and swans swim in the pond.
The deep ravine in this area was formed by a stream called Gomenyuk. The city of Gomel derived its name from this stream. The high bank of the Sozh River, along with the ravine of the Gomenyuk stream, created a protected plateau where a settlement of the ancient Slavic tribe, the Radimichs, emerged, and later the city of Gomel.
Several centuries ago, the Gomenyuk stream dried up, but the ravine remained. The Swan Pond was created in the mid-20th century as part of the city`s landscaping efforts. It is an artificial reservoir stretching along the entire ravine, designed to beautify the park area and provide a comfortable environment for the townspeople to relax.
The pond`s name is associated with the swans that inhabit it, adding a special romantic charm to the place. Although swans are not always seen on the pond today, the name has been preserved and serves as a reminder of the past. The pond is surrounded by greenery, creating shady alleys and cozy corners for relaxation.
Walking paths are laid out around the pond. In the summer, visitors can enjoy the coolness, while in the winter, the pond often turns into a skating rink, attracting fans of active recreation. A fountain is installed in the center of the pond, which is especially beautiful in the evening when the lights are turned on.
