When foreigners talk about traveling in Russia, almost every second said: "I dream of traveling on the Trans-Siberian railway." Many people dream about this, even though they will need to spend several days on the train.

The traditional route offered for traveling along the Trans-Siberian Railway is the Moscow-Beijing train. The travel time is 6 days. Distance – 8.9 thousand km. The Russian-Mongolian and Mongolian-Chinese border intersects along the road. Sightseeing is only possible in Moscow and Beijing. The rest of the time will remain to look out the window from the train.

The Geomerid online travel guide suggests changing the format of travel along the Trans-Siberian railway, and planning a trip from Moscow to Irkutsk (a distance of 5.2 thousand km). 1. Moscow

The journey along the Trans-Siberian Railway begins in the capital of Russia. Spend 2 days in the city. On the first day, plan to visit the Moscow Kremlin, Red Square, Manezhnaya Square and other places in the Historical center of Moscow. The next day you can plan a visit to the famous galleries and museums of the city: Tretyakov Gallery, Pushkin Museum, HPP-2, Historical Museum and others.

2. Nizhny Novgorod

The first stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway will be Nizhny Novgorod. It is located 420 km from Moscow (travel time is about 6 hours). Nizhny Novgorod is located on the bank of the Volga River at the place where the Oka River flows into it. The stone Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin has been preserved here; old quarters are located around it, on steep hillsides. The Nizhny Novgorod Fair is located near the Oka and Volga Arrow.

3. Kazan

The second stop on the Trans-Siberian railway will be Kazan. A stop here is mandatory, perhaps even for 2 days. Kazan is located 400 kilometers from Nizhny Novgorod (travel time is about 8 hours). Visit the Kazan Kremlin, take a walk along Bauman Street. There are many beautiful places around the Kremlin. Christian and Muslim architecture are intertwined in Kazan. There are wonderful places in the vicinity of Kazan: the island of Sviyazhsk and the ancient capital of the Bulgarians.

4. Yekaterinburg

The third stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway will be Yekaterinburg, the capital of the Urals. It is located 1000 kilometers from Kazan. The journey time will be 12-13 hours. Take a walk around the city center in the area of the City Pond, where Yekaterinburg was founded. Visit the Church on the Blood, which was built on the site of Ipatiev's House, where members of the Royal family of Nicholas II were shot. In Yekaterinburg, many places are associated with the memory of the last Emperor of Russia, Nicholas II. In the north of Yekaterinburg there is the Ganina Pit monastery, where the bodies of members of the royal family were found.

5. Tobolsk

We propose to make Tobolsk the next stop on the Trans-Siberian railway. The distance from Yekaterinburg to Tobolsk is 600 km (travel time is 14 hours). Tyumen is located directly on the route of the Trans-Siberian Railway, and Tobolsk is located 300 km north of Tyumen. However, Tobolsk is much more interesting to visit. 

The only stone Kremlin in Siberia has been preserved in this city. Tobolsk was the capital of the Siberian province. Take a walk in the Tobolsk Kremlin, and then go down the mountain to its foot. Here, visit the museum, which was created in the Governor's House. This is the place of exile of the last Russian tsar Nicholas II.

6. Omsk

In Omsk, you can make a short stop on the route of the Trans-Siberian railway. The distance from Tobolsk to Omsk is 680 km (travel time is about 14 hours). Take a walk through the historical center of the city, at the place where the Om River flows into the Irtysh. Visit museums to get acquainted with the history of the Siberian region.

7. Novosibirsk

Make the next stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway in Novosibirsk, the largest city in Siberia. There are not a lot of historical attractions here, however, the city is interesting. Take a walk along Red Avenue, visit the Novosibirsk Opera House. From Novosibirsk, you can go to Tomsk.

8. Tomsk

Tomsk was the capital of Siberia for a long time, until the Trans-Siberian Railway passed 260 km to the south through the city of Novosibirsk. There are many universities in Tomsk, about a quarter of the city's population are students. 

The wooden architecture of Tomsk is the main reason why you should come to this city. For centuries, the absolute majority of Tomsk houses were made of wood. Several times the city burned and was restored, but always in a wood. Over time, an original architecture with a beautiful carved decoration of windows and roofs was formed here. The window frames have very beautiful carvings and decorations.

9. Krasnoyarsk

From Tomsk, go to Krasnoyarsk, which is a mandatory stop on the route along the Trans-Siberian Railway. Krasnoyarsk is located on the bank of the great Siberian river Yenisei. Take a walk around the city in the area of the Communal Bridge, there are interesting sights here. 

The Krasnoyarsk Pillars Nature Reserve is located near the southern outskirts of Krasnoyarsk. It is a very beautiful nature reserve where you can see the real Siberian taiga. It is better to allocate a whole day to visit the reserve, since hiking in the forest will be long due to the long distances (about 20 km).

10. Irkutsk - Baikal

Irkutsk is the last stop on the proposed route along the Trans-Siberian Railway. In Irkutsk, see the historical center on the bank of the Angara River. After that, go to Lake Baikal. The closest village to Irkutsk on Lake Baikal is Listvyanka, but in order to see the real beauty of Lake Baikal, you need to go to Olkhon Island. This trip will take at least 4-5 days. Lake Baikal is a completely unique reservoir. It contains more than 25% of the planet's total drinking water.

These are the most beautiful cities along the route of the train on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Of course, in this case it will no longer be possible to get to Beijing. It is best to make Baikal the end point and fly home from Irkutsk. In this case, the journey will not be tedious, and you will be able to see not only the forest from the train window, but really the whole of Russia.
