The Ascension Church of Kalyazin is located near Karl Marx Street. It is built in the style of Peter the Great Baroque. Currently, the church and the surrounding area are undergoing active reconstruction. In 2009, a monument to Prince Mikhail Skopin-Shuisky was erected next to it, in memory of the events of the Time of Turmoil.

In 1694, St. Nicholas Cathedral was built on the banks of the Volga, where famous residents of Kalyazin were buried. A century later, the cemetery at the cathedral on the banks of the Volga River has grown. It was decided to move it 600 meters from the shore, closer to the Puda River. The Ascension Church was built near the new cemetery in 1783, and in 1820 a bell tower was built over it.

In 1930, the cemetery was closed and a stadium was built on this site. A bakery was working in the premises of the Ascension Church. In 2002, the Ascension Church of Kalyazin was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. By 2012, it was restored its original appearance.

Next to the church there is a monument to the great Russian commander Mikhail Skopin-Shuisky, who is undeservedly forgotten. He commanded the first volunteer corps in 1609 during the Time of Turmoil. Mikhail Skopin-Shuisky defeated the Polish army of Jan Sapieha, as well as the army of False-Dmitry II. He lifted the siege from Moscow and, perhaps, could have ended the Time of Turmoil. After the victories of his troops in the battles of Kalyazin and Dmitrov, he became so popular that he was offered to become a tsar and found a new dynasty. However, his relatives and entourage of Tsar Vasily Shuisky poisoned him. He died on April 23, 1610.

Near the church you can see several tombstones of the old Kalyazin cemetery. There is also a common cross of worship for the residents of Kalyazin, who were buried in the destroyed cemetery near the Ascension Church.
