On the left side of the Manor house in the estate of Lermontov Tarkhany is located a small stone house Church of Mary of Egypt. It was built in 1820, in memory of the early death of Maria Arsenyeva, the mother of Mikhail Lermontov. She died at the age of 21, when Mikhail was just two years old.
The Church of Mary of Egypt was built in the typical Empire style of the time, and until 1840 it was a parish Church. Mikhail Lermontov constantly visited it. During the Soviet years, it was closed, but it has been preserved to this day in its original form. The Church was re-consecrated in 2007, and now it sometimes hosts services.
Here you can see the Church utensils of the early 19th century, which were here when Mikhail Lermontov lived in Tarkhany estate. Icons of saints Mary and Elizabeth hang on the walls. The Church has created an exhibition "But we have a sacred feeling...". Creators tried to convey the religious culture of the Lermontov era in it.
