The Armenian Church of St.George is located at the foot of the Narikala Fortress on the steep slope of the Sololak Hill. Its dome rises among the houses of the Old Town of Tbilisi and decorates it. If you decide to walk through the old quarters in the direction of the Narikala Fortress, you will definitely pass by this church.
The Church of St. George is one of the oldest churches preserved in Tbilisi to this day. It was built in 1251 and today is the cathedral of the Armenian Church in Georgia. There is an assumption that St. George church was built on the site of an older Armenian temple of the 7th century. In the 13th century, the temple was erected by the decision of Prince Umek.
In 2015, the Church of St.George was restored. Thanks to these works, frescoes of the 18th century were discovered on the walls, which are of great cultural value. The frescoes of the St. George temple depict biblical scenes. These frescoes were painted by the famous Armenian painter Ovatanyan.
The dome of the St.George Church rises above Gorgasali Square. Previously, this square was called the Maidan. From here it is very convenient to start excursions around the old town. There is a small necropolis in the courtyard of the church, where prominent people of the Armenian Diaspora were buried in the 19th century.
