The Holy Cross Cathedral is located on the picturesque bank of the Romanov side of city of Tutaev. It is the oldest stone temple of Romanov. On the bank of the Volga in front of it is located the estate of the nobles Zatsepin, and next to it in a deep ravine flows a small river Medveditsa.
Coming to the Romanov side, you hve to climb the high bank and turn right. After crossing the 19th-century bridge over the Medveditsa River, you will see a square where a monument to soldiers who died in the World War II is installed. Here you need to turn to the bank of the Volga. In this place, it is all dotted with picturesque hills and ravines. The Holy Cross Cathedral is located a hundred meters from the bank of the Volga, but a path leads to it along the edge of the ravine. Here you can enjoy views of the Borisoglebsk side and the Resurrection Cathedral.
The Holy Cross Cathedral in Tutaev was built in 1658 by Yaroslavl craftsmen. It has a massive five-domed architecture. The main building of the temple is surrounded by galleries. The hipped bell tower is attached directly to the cathedral, which rises above the gallery. The cathedral has massive features typical of the North-West of Russia. Then this style spread to central Russia.
The temple was painted after construction. At the moment, the interior of the temple requires restoration, however, the paintings are well preserved. Researchers believe that the temple was painted by the artels of Kostroma masters Vasily Ilyin or Guriy Nikitin. These paintings are one of the earliest examples of the school of painting in Kostroma and Yaroslavl.
