The Kazan-Transfiguration Church in Tutaev is the most recognizable symbol of the city. Tutaev is known for its beautiful high banks of the Volga River. The church is built in the form of two steps on a steep slope of the river. It looks very picturesque.
For several centuries, the main pier of the Romanov side was located in this place. There is a legend that the inhabitants asked the arriving ships to bring with them a stone to strengthen the shore. When a sufficient number of them gathered, the steep slope of the shore was fortified, and the famous stepped church was built on it.
The Kazan-Transfiguration Church was built in 1758. The altar of the Lower Winter Church was consecrated in honor of the Kazan Mother of God, and the altar of the Upper Summer Church was consecrated in honor of the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Thus, it was called the Kazan-Transfiguration Church. The hipped bell tower was built on top of a steep slope.
The temple has a massive type of refectory temple, but on the slope of the shore, it looks very elegant. On the left side of the church began the famous Volga Embankment, which Kustodiev depicted in his paintings.
