The Landscape Museum is located on the Volga embankment in Ples in an 18th-century mansion. The decision to create this Museum was made in the 1990s. In 1997, the Ples Landscape Museum was opened in a large two-story house of merchant Groshev.
In the Museum you can see paintings by different artists with the Russian landscapes of the middle area. The choice of this theme is quite logical, since Ples became a source of inspiration for many Russian artists. Isaac Levitan spent three summers here. He painted 23 paintings and more than two hundred sketches here. There were also other famous artists of the 19th century: Repin, Savrasov, Korin, Vasiliev and others. Even today, Ples attracts landscape artists who are looking for inspiration here.
There are no Levitan paintings in the Landscape Museum, which is quite natural. Paintings by this famous artist can be viewed in the Levitan house Museum, which is located nearby. The permanent exhibition of the Museum of the Landscape you can see paintings by Russian artists: Polenov, Shishkin, Savrasov, Dubovsky, Sudkovsky, perepletchikova and others. There are also paintings of Levitan`s friends, with whom he spent summers in Ples, Alexey Stepanov and Sofia Kuvshinnikova.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions of various artists are regularly held here. They are mainly devoted to landscape painting. The Plessky plein air, Green Noise and Volga Artist festivals are held here.
