Mount Olympus is the highest peak in Cyprus. It is located in the Troodos mountain range, in the Eastern regions of the island. A trip to the mountains, with a visit to the top of Olympus, is one of the most interesting excursions from any beach area of Cyprus. In winter, you can come here for a ski resort.
Mount Olympus in Cyprus has a similar name to the Greek Olympus, where, according to ancient Greek mythology, the gods lived. Cyprus Olympus (height 1952 m) is lower than the Greek Olympus (2917 m), and the gods have never lived on it. However, the interest of tourists to it does not become less. At the very top of mount Olympus there are two military bases: English and Cypriot. Access to these bases is closed and filming is prohibited. Thus, it makes no sense to climb to the very top. If you want to enjoy panoramic views of the Troodos mountains, including views of Olympus, then you should definitely visit the Tomb of Archbishop Makarios III. It is near Kykkos monastery on the mountain of Throni. The height of this mountain is 1318 meters, and from there you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the Troodos mountains.
The Artemis Trail runs around mount Olympus. Its length is 7 kilometers, and it goes through a dense forest among pines and cedars. There will be viewpoints on the way, but they are located near the automobile highway.
There are similar trails in the cedar forest in the nearby village of Troodos, which is located 2.5 kilometers from Olympus. This village is the main starting point for mountain trekking near Olympus, as well as for skiing in winter.
From January to March, there is enough snow on the Northern slope of Olympus, so a ski resort is open here. On the northern slope of Olympus there are 5 skiing trails of varying difficulty. The neighboring northern slope is called Sunny Valley, and it is equipped with 4 more trails.
