The Saint Nicholas Museum is located in the square in front of the Basilica of Saint Nicholas in the old city of Bari. All the Museum`s exhibits are associated with Saint Nicholas. There are also items of Church utensils that were used by priests from Bari.
The Museum of St. Nicholas contains many exhibits related to the life of St. Nicholas in the Lycian city of Myra. Even during his life, he was called a Wonderworker, and many miracles that he performed are described in his hagiography. After his death in 342, Nicholas was buried in the Church of the city of Mira, where he was bishop. Soon he was canonized as Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.
In the Museum you can see manuscripts, paintings, Church cups from Byzantine times to the present day. There are items made of gold and silver. Since Saint Nicholas is very revered in the Orthodox world, there are many icons with his image. You can also see several candlesticks from the 12th century. They were given to the Basilica of Saint Nicholas by king Charles I of Anjou.
In the multimedia hall, you can see a film in different languages about Saint Nicholas. It tells about the life of Bishop Nicholas in the city of Myra in Lycia, about his death and beatification. Then you can learn about the transfer of the relics from Mira to Bari, as well as the construction of the Basilica.
