The Resurrection Cathedral in the city of Tutaev is a beautiful example of Yaroslavl monumental architecture. It rises above the Borisoglebsk side on the high bank of the Volga. The Resurrection Cathedral is the main attraction of the city of Tutaev.
The Resurrection Cathedral was built in the period 1652-1675. The temple is divided into winter and summer chapels. By the 19th century, a fence with a Holy Gate and a bell tower were built around the cathedral. The altar side of the cathedral faces the Volga River. Staircase descends to the river embankment here. The cathedral from the opposite bank looks very monumental. The artist Boris Kustodiev came to Tutaev several times in the early 20th century. Here he painted his famous paintings of Russian provincial cities. The Resurrection Cathedral is depicted on some of them.
The first wooden church on this site was built by the Borisoglebsk in 1238. Subsequently, it was often rebuilt, until in the 17th century it was decided to erect a stone cathedral. Yaroslavl craftsmen built the Resurrection Cathedral with a height of 50 meters.
In the 1680s, the Resurrection Cathedral in Tutaev was painted by an artel of Yaroslavl masters. Researchers suggest that this was the artel of Dmitry Grigoriev. The eight-row iconostasis is a remarkable example of wood carving from the 17th century. The entire western wall is occupied by the composition of the Last Judgment. The church was not closed in the Soviet years, so the interior of the Resurrection Cathedral has remained unchanged to this day.
The main shrine of the Resurrection Cathedral of Tutaev is a huge icon of the Savior of the All-merciful (3 meters by 2.7 meters). It was written at the end of the 14th century by Saint Dionysius Glushitsky. Near the iconostasis you can see wonderful examples of wood carving: Cross of the Passion of Christ, Icon of Nikola Mozhaysky.
