Svetlitsa Island is located on the eastern shore of Lake Seliger. It can be called the most famous resort area of Seliger. The whole island is covered with a dense pine forest. There are numerous cottages, guest houses and hotels are located among trees. There is a pier for excursion ships and boats, which can reach any part of the lake.
For many tourists, Lake Seliger is associated with fishing and camping in nature. However, there are also historical sights on Seliger. Many attractions are located in the city of Ostashkov, but the real pearl of Seliger is the monastery of the Nilo-Stolobenskaya Hermitage. It is located on the island of Stolbny. It is possible to get to this island only through the larger Island of Svetlitsa.
The monastery of the Nilo-Stolobenskaya Hermitage was founded in 1594. The village of Svetlitsa appeared on the neighboring island. Over time, not only the village, but the entire island was named Svetlitsa.
In the 19th century, large-scale construction began in the monastery. In 1821, one of the largest cathedrals in Russia was built here, and the cell’s buildings began to resemble the palaces of St. Petersburg. The monastery grew rich, and the settlement on the Island of Svetlitsa also developed.
Houses among the pine forest are built almost all over the island. However, there are places where you can walk to admire the centuries-old pine trees. There is also a sandy beach on the island. At the pier near the monastery, you can take a boat. Usually, tourists make excursion along the shore of Khachin Island. A ship, which runs between the city of Ostashkov in the Nilo-Stolobenskaya Hermitage, is also moored at the same pier.
